The "article" is about an African-American dad talking to his son about the dangers of the police. The son is turning 12. So what I took away from this work of satire is that there is an epidemic of young Unarmed (don't carry things in your hands. Don't hang out with kids who carry things in their hands) African-American kids being shot by the police. I beleive the WP has been doing a pretty good job of tracking these things and the actual number of times that such an incident occurred in 2017 is 1. When you only control for being unarmed and take race and age out of it the number is 68. Is 68 a lot ? I don't know, but if you or a member of your family are one of those 68 then it's pretty significant. How many fatal police shootings should we expect in a year? There are millions of citizen/police contacts every year. Many of these are violent. We charge the police with the duty of not only protecting their own lives, but protecting the lives of everyone around them. Most law enforcement officers go through their entire career without ever firing their weapon, but they can recount a number of times when they could have used deadly force and it would have been justified, but they did not. We can't get to Zero with fatal police shootings. We can't get to zero with the number of kids who are killed by their parents every year. Remember, that number is around 500. We also have 2,000 to 3,000 kids die every year in car crashes. That's 6 a day. So back where I started. Not saying that police shootings aren't tragic, just trying to put them into perspective.
